WASHINGTON, DC - The day was more than two years in the making, but the significance of its arrival was not lost on any in attendance. Ever since local golfers Puff Daddy and Godking first joined Lone Star for a round of golf in the summer of 1998, these three hackers had yearned for a day when all three would be able to enjoy a good round of golf at the same time. It might not seem so difficult for three golfers to experience such an event, especially considering the number of rounds that had transpired since then. However, until the morning of Saturday, May 27, that feeling was an elusive one. No more.
Seeking to build on a pair of decent rounds the day before, Godking and Lone Star returned to the links on Saturday morning with Puff Daddy in tow. Langston would be the course of choice, a nice change of pace from Hanes Point and without all the rocks and packed dirt of Rock Creek. Light rains the previous week had softened the greens considerably, not to mention leaving the fairways lush and full. For a free swinger like Lone Star, this had no effect, but iron maestros Puff Daddy and Godking lit up upon surveying the land. Hours and many nailed approach shots later, their glee would prove well-founded.
Godking burst from the gate with a booming drive on the opening par 5, a shot that would eventually lead him to one-putt for par. He built upon this lead at the fourth hole, where his tee shot on the par 3 left him a fifteen-foot downhill birdie putt. Despite rolling this putt just past the hole, Godking happily notched his second par of the day. A beautiful approach on the fifth hole led to another birdie putt, but the day's early leader was forced to settle for yet another par. Even a bogey on the sixth hole would not alter his mood, as the enigmatic golfer entered the home stretch with a lead of three and four strokes respectively over Puff Daddy and Lone Star. On the last three holes, however, it would be a different story.
Puff Daddy made his brief, though impressive, charge on the very next hole. While Godking was lofting a pop-fly drive into the rough on the right, Puff Daddy hit yet another majestic drive, leaving him in position for a legitimate birdie try. Even though his approach left him less then five feet below the pin, Puff Daddy had to settle for a par, a score which nonetheless moved him into a tie for the lead and two shots ahead of Lone Star. Despite that momentum, Puff Daddy's chances ended on the par 3 eighth hole as his short game left him. Lone Star seized the opportunity with a two-putt bogey, moving within one shot of Godking. When Godking struggled off the tee on the final hole, Lone Star made him pay. A short chip gave the lefty a ten-foot putt for the win, and he calmly knocked it home. This allowed all three golfers to finish their rounds with no more than fifty strokes, and all left confident for the future.
