Live at Luther College

Artist: Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds
Genre: Alternative
Year: 1999
Rating: 7.5 / 10

Dave Matthews leaves his band behind in his latest effort, choosing to perform with long-time friend Tim Reynolds in a 23-song set recorded early in February 1996. Live at Luther College, the second in a series of live albums to be released by the Dave Matthews Band, is an entirely acoustic performance, featuring a good portion of the band's most famous work, as well as a few forgotten gems and a number from Reynolds.

Live at Luther College is a definite change of pace from the more lively, powerful Live at Red Rocks, and some of the differences are quite apparent. The absence of Boyd Tinsley's violins and Leroi Moore's saxophone is certainly felt, particularly on anthems such as "Ants Marching" and "Tripping Billies." That being said, with a setlist as impressive as this, the album is quite an achievement. Luther gives the band's fans a glimpse at the softer side of the band, including some rare live performances of such songs as "Cry Freedom" and "A Christmas Song." Even tried and true songs such as "Crash Into Me" and "Satellite" come out with a fresh coat of polish thanks to their acoustic arrangements.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this album has to be the national awakening to the talent of Tim Reynolds. Long a contributor on albums for the Dave Matthews Band, Reynolds has wallowed in relative obscurity, save those times when he is fortunate enough to tour with Matthews. He offers his own "Stream," while performing admirably on all of the Dave Matthews tracks. Reynolds and Matthews combine to produce some impressive renditions of band favorites, including standout versions of "#41" and "Say Goodbye." "Seek Up" also makes the stylish transition from stage rocker to mellow jam.

In the end, what carries this album is what has defined the band throughout the nineties - Dave Matthews. His unique voice, as well as his jingling guitar, power this set, offering his fans exactly what they have been looking for - more. With 1999's acoustic tour already underway, fans can look for more of the same on the road. More jamming, more singing, and, most importantly, more Dave Matthews.
