Sometimes, before a movie even starts, you can sense trouble coming down the pipeline. It might simply be a premonition, or it might be something more overt. As I sat down to watch Not Another Teen Movie, I ingested what had to be the worst collection of movie trailers I have ever seen. Needless to say, I knew at once that I was soon to redefine painful discomfort, and, ninety minutes later, I learned how right I was. Not Another Teen Movie, steered by now-former director Joel Gallen (of The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show fame), is atrocious, and it represents ninety minutes of my life that I will never have back again. Delving into the plot would be pointless, as advertisements for this film do frankly admit, as would praise for the "fine" performances. Skip the film, skip the suffering, and save yourself.

For those who were not turned off by the above warning, allow me to attempt one more time to steer you away from this must-miss movie. Skewering every teen film from American Pie to Never Been Kissed to She's All That, Not Another Teen Movie leaves no late-nineties teen film unscathed. Some parodies, such as those of mid-eighties Molly Ringwald films, are quite blatant (although sure to misfire with the film's likely target market), while others are destined to fall flat. The film trots out every teen movie cliché, particularly related to the stereotypical wooden characters. Unfortunately, aside from bringing these stereotypes to our attention, the film does nothing humorous with them.

When I think of a film like Not Another Teen Movie, I wonder if any of the participants in any way advanced their careers - not their bank accounts, mind you - through this effort. Jaime Pressly, perhaps best known as the star of (fellow film critic) Avon's classic Poison Ivy: The New Seduction, is considered one of the "name" actors in this role, but pickings are slim. Most of the "stars," including director Joel Gallen, hail from dead-end television offerings, and I honestly wonder if any of them will survive this blight on their collective resumes. Not Another Teen Movie is, sorry to say, just another teen movie, and not a good one at that.
