Animated GI Jane or the story of how to win a war and a man?
The newest installment in the Disney Juggernaut of Animated Summer Films is Mulan, a richly drawn, awesomely colored and features, unfortunately, a rather trite storyline.
Imagine if you will the concept of an outspoken chinese girl. I'll call her Alex with brains and wit. Now place her in the Demi Moore-esque role of a warrior. Oh, sure she lied, but she did it for the right reasons. Her wounded father (a glorious warrior we learn circumspectly) was inducted into ye olde conscription, but Mulan goes in his stead. Now as her father, getting on in years, is smallish and clumsy, her disguise works. The movie does not, but her disguise does. Okay. So now I have to bitch.
The HUNS? The HUNS? The Great Wall was built to keep out the HUNS? Or was it the Mongols? Men like Genghis and Kublai (who actually ruled China for a long while as emperor), fierce warriors and ruthless strategists.
Men like Shan-Yu.
