Legally Blonde is just like another summer treat - cotton candy: sweet, fluffy, not too filling and all sorts of fun. If you feel the way Jack Nicholson's character does in As Good As it Gets about people who speak in metaphors, perhaps rephrasing is necessary. This movie is light, amusing entertainment (in the true sense of the word). The director places a great deal of confidence in Reese Witherspoon's ability to win the audience over with a perky sort of charm, and she is more than up to the task.

Legally Blonde does not overburden itself with plot, relying instead on Reese's winning ways and some very humorous situations. Sun-bleached California beauty queen/sorority girl Elle Woods (Witherspoon) is dumped by her picture-perfect boyfriend, Warner Huntington III. She does not fit in with his future in politics, let alone his present plans to attend law school on (gasp!) the East Coast. Elle gathers herself up from the disappointment in a big way, somehow earning a spot in Warner's own class at Harvard in retaliation. Now she'll show him! Neither the students nor the professors make life easy on her, but relying on her faith in people and her instincts honed by diligent Cosmo readings, Elle begins to take the legal world by storm. An assorted cast of kindred spirits helps her on her way (just as she helps them in her own way), including a down-on-her-luck manicurist, a sweet-natured lawyer and a few surprise allies.

Perhaps the greatest criticism of this film is the lack of a splendid plot, such as that of Clueless (borrowed from Jane Austen's Emma). At final judgment, though, the absence is not enough to slow down this film, which is buoyed by the main character's incredibly high spirits and moxie, as well as some great lines and sight gags. How can anyone dislike a film that features the triumph of a good-hearted blonde over a bunch of stuffy lawyers? This is Rudy in a pink mini-skirt.
